There are many and varied Christmas services taking place over the festive period here at Ripon Cathedral.
On Wednesday 23rd December and Christmas Eve we will have a festival of Nine Lesson and Carols both starting at 5:30 pm, This service is so popular, we have to put it on twice. The Cathedral Choir will lead the annual celebrations of the Christmas story. The Story of the Birth of the Christ Child will be celebrated in both words and music. Perennial favourites such as Once in Royal David City and Hark Herald Angels will be sung along with many other favourites.
On Christmas Eve at 11.00am, there will be a Family Christmas Service entitled “The Angels List”. The service will be fun, interactive and suitable for the whole family. Even better, if you want to, you can come dressed as one of the characters from the nativity story, Adults as well as children.
At 11.30pm on Christmas Eve, Bishop James, Bishop of Ripon, will Celebrate the First Eucharist of Christmas, where we remember and celebrate Jesus’ birth.
On Christmas Day itself, we have an 8.00 am traditional language service, a 10.30 am Festal Eucharist with the Cathedral Choir and a 12.30 Eucharist (BCP). Finally, the day ends with Evening Prayer, a good way to celebrate and say thank you for the day which has passed, at 3.30 pm.
Boxing Day sees the Eucharist and Pilgrimage to Fountains Abbey which is led by Bishop James. This starts from the Cathedral at 9.30 am and is approximately 4 miles long. This is a great way to get out into the local countryside and walk off some of the Christmas festivities. Evening prayer will then be at 5.30 pm.
Lastly, How about welcoming in the New Year with the Watch night service and torchlight Procession on New Year’s Eve. The atmospheric Watchnight Service led by Bishop Nick, Bishop of West Yorkshire and the Dales, which takes place in the Cathedral is followed by a Candlelit procession to the Market Square
