Raise your (Floral) Hats
July 21 - July 29
A collection of beautiful ‘floral hats’ goes on display at Ripon Cathedral this week as we remember the effort and sacrifice of over seven million women in World War Two.
Arranged by Ripon Cathedral Flower Guild the floral creations are part of the Raise Your Hats campaign which aims to ensure the amazing stories of these women are heard and remembered for years to come.
Also on display is a collection of thank you letters to those whose contributions were often unrecognised and unrecorded at the time.
Raise Your Hats has launched a national ‘hunt for a heroine’ with campaigners asking people to search for their own family stories by speaking to relatives, looking through memory boxes and then submitting their findings to the campaign’s soon to be launched website.
The website’s been created following a grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund and its primary aim is to educate current and future generations about the incredible part women played in this country’s success in World War Two – the many and varied roles they took on being vital to the war effort.
The Very Rev John Dobson, Dean of Ripon, said: “I am very pleased that we are hosting this exhibition at Ripon Cathedral. The focus of our vision for mission here at the cathedral is Growing God’s Kingdom. We believe that Jesus wanted fullness of life for everyone and we delight in helping people to celebrate the efforts of the known and unknown to enhance the life of fellow men and women.”
The exhibition will run from July 21 – 29.
