Andrew Bryden – Director of Music
Andrew Bryden has been Organist and Director of Music of Ripon Cathedral since November 2003. Prior to this he was the Cathedral’s Assistant Organist and Director of Music at Ripon Cathedral Choir School from 1998. His work at Ripon has received much acclaim, most notably for his vision and implementation of a new choral foundation in 2012.
Andrew studied music as an organ scholar at Aberdeen University, and specialised in performance and editorial techniques. His organ teachers included Roger Bevan Williams, George McPhee, and Timothy Byram-Wigfield. Toward the end of his university studies, Andrew was appointed Organ Scholar and subsequently Assistant Organist of St. Andrew’s Cathedral, Aberdeen.
After graduation Andrew moved to Sheffield as Director of Music of St. John’s Church, Ranmoor. Here he maintained and developed the historic music tradition established by his predecessors, studied for a Postgraduate Certificate in Education at Bretton Hall, and continued to develop his organ playing with David Sanger.
In 1994 Andrew became Organ Scholar of Canterbury Cathedral. He held this post for an unprecedented three years, including a brief spell as Acting Assistant Organist, and combined this work with the post of Head of Academic Music at St. Edmund’s School, Canterbury.
As an accompanist and recitalist Andrew has played at many of the major venues in the United Kingdom, and has undertaken tours to Holland, Germany, Austria and North America. He has broadcast on both BBC and independent radio and television and has made a number of CD recordings on various labels.
In addition to his Cathedral duties and organ playing commitments, Andrew undertakes a modest amount of private teaching and is an ABRSM examiner. He is also active as a composer, and some of his choral works are published by Encore Publications.
